Farm Management Checklist for May
√ Complete spring vaccinations if haven’t done so already.
√ Deworm livestock and horses if necessary.
√ Implement a fly control program (manure removal/composting, fly predators, sprays, dusts, tags).
√ Order and plant warm season perennials (bermudagrass) or annuals (millet, crabgrass).
√ Scout for emergence of summer weeds (ex. horse nettle, dog fennel and pigweed) and apply herbicide while plants are small (3 inches) for most effective control.
√ Fertilize warm-season pastures with nitrogen and other required nutrients based on soil analysis.
√ Mow fescue pastures no lower than 4 inches once seed heads emerge to keep vegetative and maintain quality.
√ Submit soil analysis for fescue pastures and spread any needed lime to prepare for planned fall seeding.
√ Use baits to control fire ant populations when air temperatures are between 70-90 degrees F and when ants are foraging (potato chip-check).
