4-H Goat Thief Was a Surprise to All

Earlier this week we enlisted your help in helping us find four missing goats who had disappeared from the 4-H Herd. Our assumption was that someone had stolen them, and we asked you to help us keep an eye out for them. Our Extension community has been phenomenal! So many of you have called, emailed, and dropped by to check on our missing animals. We have been overwhelmed by your support.
When two additional goats went missing from a locked shed overnight on Thursday, both the Polk County Sheriff’s department and Animal Control were called in to investigate further. It was the amazing officers of our county Animal Control who quickly recognized that our culprit was not human at all. All evidence points to a repeated bear attack. While we are devastated to have our herd decimated in such a way, we are beyond grateful to our local authorities for helping us bring the mystery to a conclusion.
The remaining members of the 4-H herd have been moved to a safe location until Wildlife officers can locate the predator. Meanwhile, all of us at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Polk County Center want to extend our sincere thanks for your care and concern for the animals and for the 4-H youth and volunteers who have come to love them.
